Create your own music label: The key steps to launch your structure with style! 💃
So, have you always dreamed of starting your own music label? Something cool that suits you, that will allow you to release the sounds that make you vibrate, and maybe even unearth the next prodigy of the underground scene? Don't panic, we'll give you all the steps to build your own musical structure, with a good dose of fun and creativity.
🎶Step 1: Find your universe and your label name
First step, and not the least: you need a vision. Your label should be an extension of you, your musical tastes, what you want to bring to the scene. Do you dream of a minimalist electro label, a rap crew with punchy lyrics, or maybe a haven for indie pop-folk artists who like plaid shirts?
Once you have defined your universe, you need... a name! Yeah, we're not going to call it "Label Anonyme 42". Take the time to brainstorm, whether alone or with friends. Your name must be memorable, reflect your musical style and, let's be honest, be cool to pronounce. Also remember to check that the name is not already taken (it would be a shame to receive a lawyer's letter after your first EP...).
🧑⚖️Step 2: Choose your legal structure (but cool, I promise)
Ok, ok, we know that paperwork is not the most exciting thing, but it is an essential step. If you want to do things properly, you need a legal structure. Depending on your project and your means, you can opt for an association, a company (SASU, SARL, etc.), or even self-employment if you want to start small.
Why is it important? Because you will have to manage contracts with artists, distributors, streaming platforms, etc. So you need a legal framework. The good news is that you can find solutions that fit your budget without breaking the bank.
Here at MaAuLa, it's a SASU, but it really depends on what you want to do with your label. We'll talk about it more precisely soon.
🌍Step 3: Start your network (contacts are key)
In the music world, networking is gold. Your label won’t exist in a vacuum. You’ll need to connect with the right people: artists, producers, sound engineers, digital distributors, even media and influencers. It’s like building a dream team.
Start by going to music events that match your style. Meet people, talk about your project, get business cards (yes, it still works!) and start a relationship. And if you can't go to events, head to social media! Insta, Twitter (or X, if you prefer), TikTok, LinkedIn... The goal is to make yourself known and attract talent.
🎤Step 4: Look for artists (real ones) and projects to sign
The heart of your label is the music. And therefore, the artists you sign. No rush here. Finding artists you resonate with, and who align with your vision, is essential. Take the time to research, discuss, and listen to a lot of sounds.
Some labels specialize in a specific style, others are more eclectic. It's up to you to see what you like. Once you've found your rare gem, get them to sign a contract (yes, more paperwork, but necessary so that everything is clear between you) and get started!
🎵Step 5: Distribute your music (do it right!)
Today, music distribution is mostly digital. Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer, Tidal… you know the drill. You will need to go through a digital distributor who will take care of placing your releases on these platforms. Services like TuneCore, DistroKid are called “aggregators”, you pay to be distributed everywhere, super simple. But there are also distributors like Believe, the distributor of MaAuLa, or Idol. The relationship is different because if you don't pay for the service, it takes a higher % on the royalties, this interest fair that the distributor is supposed to work on its releases and therefore participate in the distribution. But finding a distributor when you start is not easy, because they are selective, unlike aggregators who have no selection system, they take everything!
But don't forget the physical! If you want vinyl or CD, it's still possible and it even looks very chic, especially for limited editions that will delight hardcore fans. Bonus: you can play the collector and create beautiful objects.
📍Step 6: Create buzz around your releases (lots of fun here)
Having good sound is great. But you still need to get people to listen to it! That's where marketing comes in. Use social media to tease your releases, work with publicists (if you have the budget), use marketing tools, and most importantly, be creative.
Organize online events or showcases. Collaborate with music influencers or specialized bloggers. In short, get people talking about you in a cool and offbeat way, without taking yourself too seriously. Fun is also what makes a label endearing and memorable.
📹Step 7: Manage promotion and press relations
Last but not least: promotion. Once your label starts to gain momentum, you need to be consistent in your communication. Send out press releases for each new release, offer interviews with your artists, organize live sessions on social networks… In short, make sure that the media (and your audience) are talking about you.
The final word: patience, perseverance and passion
🏔️Starting a label is not a sprint, it's a marathon. You're not going to become the next big thing overnight, and that's okay. Have fun, make music that suits you, surround yourself with the right people, and be patient. Passion and perseverance are what will make the difference.
So, ready to get started and rock with your own music label? Rock on!🎸
